It has always seemed to me that there’s a problem here.23 If Darwinian evolution is indeed a random process, how can we speak about ‘accidental’ or ‘unintended’ outcomes? Dawkins argues at several points in his books that the natural world may have the appearance of design, but this appearance of design or intentionality arises from random developments.24 However, if Dawkins is right, surely all outcomes of the evolutionary process are ‘unintended’.
